- The objective of a fashion merchandising is to multifaceted. They are in charge of selecting, purchasing and promoting clothes and accessories. In addition it is commonplace for them to visit with manufacturers and other foreign or domestic markets to help scout out emerging trends.
- The education requirement for a fashion merchandiser is a 2 or 4 year degree. This is very much a job that can be learned through experience and exposure to the industry rather than at school.
- There are no program admissions requirements but like i previously mentioned the more experience you have in the industry the better so internships are valued.
- The typical coursework that is required in a fashion merchandising program is similar to the coursework of any four year college program. Homework assigned on a daily bases coupled with the occasional test and/or project.
- There are many schools that offer fashion merchandising programs. Locally the academy of arts offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees. One of the best programs in the nation for fashion merchandising can be found in a surprising place, Kent State University which is located in Ohio. San Francisco State also offers a program in fashion merchandising, our local community college CCSF even offers an AS. I was surprised by these findings.
- The college that I am going to focus on is the program that is offered by the academy of arts. Their programs is one of the top in the state. The program requires 120 units to graduate, theses are broken down into 3 written communications courses, 4 art historical courses, 1 historical awareness, quantitative literacy, cultural ideas and influence, and employment communication course.
- Considering the fact that I am finishing up getting my bachelor's degrees currently I think that I would be able to start the program September of 2017 and finish in 4 years meaning that I would be done come May of 2021.
